THE ROLE OF ICG IN ASSESSMENT OF LOW RECTAL ANASTOMOTIC PERFUSION

Abstract

Aims: The study aim was to investigate the role of Indocyano Green (ICG) in assessing anastomotic perfusion in laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer treatment, through investigating the rate of anastomotic leak, change of the  initially planned transection site, change of surgical method after using ICG. Methods: Prospective study, clinical intervention without control group. There are 19 cases that meet the criteria to be included in the study from January 2021 to January 2023. Results: The rate of low rectal anastomotic leakage after assessing anastomotic perfusion with ICG was 5.2%, equivalent to that without ICG usage. In addition, there was no case that need to change the initially planned transection site or surgical method after using ICG to assess anastomotic perfusion. Conclusions: ICG helps assess low rectal anastomotic perfusion effectively and objectively. However, assessing anastomotic perfusion using ICG does not change the anastomotic leak rate, the  initially planned transection site or surgical method compared to assessing anastomotic perfusion with the naked eye.
