NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS OLD AND MOTHERS' KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES ON CHILD CARE IN SOME DISTRICTS OF KONTUM PROVINCE IN 2022

Abstract

Objective: To assess the nutritional status of children under 5 years old and mothers' knowledge and practices regarding child care in some districts of Kon Tum province in 2022. Subjects and research methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August to December 2022 on 360 pairs of mothers and children under 5 years old in 3 districts of Dak To, Kon Plong, and Tu Mo Rong, through anthropometric assessment of children and assessment of mothers' knowledge and practices in child care. Results: The rate of malnutrition was high, according to WHO's cut-off values for public health significance, with the rate of stunting being 40.3%, the rate of underweight being 24.2%, and the rate of wasting being 2.8%. The proportion of mothers with good knowledge and good practices for exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months were 41.4% and 25.3%; and only 7.4% of mothers fed their children enough atleast 5 out of 8 food groups in complementary meals. Conclusion: The rate of malnutrition in children under 5 years old in the study area is high, according to WHO's cut-off values for public health significance. Mothers do not have adequate knowledge and practices in child care.
