CLINICAL FEATURES OF SLEEP DISTURBANCES IN PATIENTS WITH SOMATIZATION DISORDER

Abstract

Background: Sleep disturbances is a common symptom in somatization disorder, with some characteristic features that are both similar and different from sleep problems in depression and anxiety. Objectives: To describe some clinical features of sleep disturbances in patients with somatization disorder. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 70 patients diagnosed with somatization disorder, treated at the National Institute of Mental Health from September 2020 to May 2021, evaluating based on medical records and a psychological test named the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: 52/70 patients (74.3%) had sleep disturbances in clinical assessment, of which 100% was insomnia. In particular, by sleep stages, difficult initiating sleep accounted for the highest percentage (n=38, 73.1%); in general, insomnia in all 3 stages of sleep accounted for the highest rate 34.6%, complete insomnia accounted for 25%, patients with only difficulty initiating sleep was just 11.5%; while on the PSQI, up to 66/70 patients (94.3%) had sleep disturbances. Conclusion: Sleep disturbances are common in somatization disorder and they are a matter of concern in the care and treatment of these patients.
