OUTCOMES OF SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR ANKLE AND FOOT DEFECTS USING THE LATERAL SUPRAMALLEOLAR FLAP AT THAI NGUYEN NATIONAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of surgical treatment for soft tissue defects of the ankle and foot using the lateral supramalleolar flap. Subjects and Methods: A total of 39 patients underwent surgical treatment using the lateral supramalleolar flap from January 2018 to June 2024 at the Thai Nguyen Central Hospital. Results: Short-term outcomes: Excellence: 35/39 patients (89.7%), Good: 03/39 patients (7.7%), Bad: 01/39 patient (2.6%). Long-term outcomes: All patients had well-healed scars, and the flap remained soft and flexible. One patient required additional skin grafting after more than 50% of the flap necrosed, but this did not significantly affect the long-term outcome. The skin in the lower leg and ankle region matched well in terms of color and thickness with the recipient site. Conclusion: The lateral supramalleolar flap is an effective reconstructive material for covering defects in the ankle and foot, ensuring both functional and aesthetic outcomes.
