Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the initial results of systemic chemotherapy combined with local treatment for bilateral retinoblastoma (RB) Group E. Method: A prospective descriptive case series study involving 8 patients diagnosed with bilateral Group E retinoblastoma treated with systemic chemotherapy combined with local therapy at the Viet Nam National Eyes Hospital from August 2023 to August 2024. Results: The study involved 8 patients with intraocular bilateral retinoblastoma, encompassing 9 eyes classified as Group E. Patient characteristics revealed that leukocoria was the most common symptom, and most patients had a healthy personal and family medical history. Follow-up and treatment outcomes for Group E retinoblastoma indicated that all tumors reduced in size, with an average decrease of 4.3 mm. Six eyes showed a good response to treatment, while 3 cases did not respond and required enucleation. Conclusion: The combination of systemic chemotherapy and local treatment (laser/cyrotherapy) is necessary and safe for managing intraocular retinoblastoma, aiming to reduce tumor size, preserve vision, and limit enucleation.
