Abstract
This study evaluates the efficacy of nutrition intervention by oral nutrition supplements (ONS) during hospital stay in the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Departments at University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City. We provided ONS delivering 400-500 kcal and 16-20 g of protein daily to 73 inpatients. Throughout the study, we recorded and monitored patients' anthropometric measurements and paraclinical indices. Results showed an average increase in prealbumin levels of 3.1 ± 5.2 mg/dL. Additionally, 78.1% of patients met the recommended caloric intake of ≥ 25 kcal/kg/day, and the average energy and protein intakes were 30.8 ± 8.6 kcal/kg/day and 1.3 ± 0.4 g/kg/day, respectively. The results indicate that ONS can effectively increase calorie and protein intake, and improve prealbumin levels in patients at risk of malnutrition during hospital stay
