RESULTS OF ULTRASONIC-GUIDED ABSOLUTE ALCOHOL ABLATION METHOD FOR TREATMENT OF THYROID CYSTS AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL OF ENDOCRINOLOGY

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided alcohol ablation in the treatment of thyroid cysts at the National Hospital of Endocrinology. Subjects and methods: Non-controlled interventional study on 83 patients diagnosed with thyroid cysts, indicated for ultrasound-guided absolute alcohol injection at the National Hospital of Endocrinology from 01.07.2023 to 01.10.2024, fully meeting the criteria for disease selection. The effectiveness was evaluated based on the reduction in cyst volume, the improvement in aesthetic score, DASS21 score and increased vascularity. Results: 87 cysts received 1 injection, 14 cysts received 2 injections (1 month after the 1st injection). The median alcohol volume was 3ml (both times). The median volume of the nodule before the intervention, 1 month after the intervention and 3 months after the intervention was 6.31; 1.08 and 1.02 ml, respectively. The median volume of the thyroid cyst after the intervention was significantly improved compared to before the intervention. Similarly, the aesthetic score and DASS21 were significantly improved at both time points after the intervention (1 month and 3 months). The overall success rate of the study group at 1 month and 3 months was 75.9% and 78.2%, respectively. The failure rate was 1.1% and 2.3% at the above time points. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided absolute alcohol ablation for the treatment of thyroid cysts is a highly effective method.
