Abstract

Purpose: Describe corneal endothelial cell changes after vitrectomy with scleral fixation of introcular lens (SFIOL) surrgery. Methods: Clinical intervention study without control group, prospective with subjects being patients assigned to vitrectomy with scleral fixation of introcular lens (surrgery at Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital. Results: The study was conducted on 63 patients (18 females, 28.57%) with 126 eyes surveyed, with an average age of 59.65 ± 9.64 years. The distribution of the patients' residence areas showed that 14 cases lived in Ho Chi Minh City (22.22%). Among the 126 eyes, 63 were healthy and 63 had undergone surgical intervention. Of the 63 surgically treated eyes, 31 still had a lens (49.21%) and 32 no longer had a lens (50.79%). The corneal endothelial cell density was examined in two groups: healthy eyes and surgical eyes. The corneal endothelial cell density in the 63 surgical eyes at 1 month post-surgery decreased by 7.67 ± 7.22%, while in the healthy eye group it decreased by 1.07 ± 1.80%. At 3 months, the endothelial cell density in the surgical group decreased by 8.42 ± 5.67%, and in the healthy eye group it decreased by 1.97 ± 2.75%. Both time points showed a statistically significant decrease in endothelial cells (p<0.05). Conclusion: The decrease in corneal endothelial cells is associated with surgical intervention involving vitrectomy with scleral-fixated intraocular lens implantation without suturing. In the surgically treated eyes, the reduction in endothelial cells was significantly more pronounced compared to the healthy eyes after a 3-month follow-up period.
