Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the dietary intake of children with epilepsy onset before 6 months old at the National Children's Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 105 children diagnosed with epilepsy before 6 months old and receiving treatment at the National Children’s Hospital from June 2023 to June 2024. The 24-hour dietary recall combined with a food frequency questionnaire was used to estimate the nutritional intake of these children over a 24-hour period. The results: The majority of the children were under 2 years old (62.9%), with boys accounting for 56.2%. The proportion of children meeting the Recommended Dietary Intake (RDI) for energy was 64.7%, for protein 93.3%, for lipids 67.6%, while carbohydrates were only 35.3%. A high proportion of children did not meet the recommended intake for essential micronutrients, including vitamin D (89.5%), magnesium (49.5%), and iron (34.3%). Conclusion: The study highlights significant deficiencies in dietary intake among children with epilepsy, particularly for key micronutrients such as vitamin D, magnesium, and iron.
