Abstract

Lateral sinus thrombophlebitis is a rare but severe intracranial complication of middle ear cholesteatoma. This complication is commonly suspected in patients with perforated tympanic membrane associated with otorrhea, fever, and neurological symptoms. CT-scan and MRI allow early diagnosis and play a role in detecting intracranial complications. Surgical intervention should be early and anticoagulation should be considered. However, clinical manifestations of chronic otitis media varies  over time. In the case of complicated lateral vein thrombosis due to chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma with closed tympanic membrane presenting as acute otitis media in healthy young men, we would like to update the current diagnosis and treatment of middle ear cholesteatoma with lateral sinus thrombophlebitis.
