PREOPERATIVE ANXIETY AMONG PATIENTS IN SELECTED SURGICAL DEPARTMENTS AT BACH MAI HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: To describe the level of pre-operative anxiety and associated factors among  patients with schedule surgery at certain surgical departments of Bach Mai Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two departments: General Surgery - Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, and Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Bach Mai Hospital from February 1st to April 15th, 2023. Results: A total of 125 patients with schedule surgery participated in the study. The mean pre-operative anxiety score was 11.48 ± 3.62, with 36% of patients experiencing high levels of anxiety (APAIS-A >13). Characteristics such as gender, education level, comorbidities, previous surgery history, waiting time for surgery, and support from healthcare staff were associated with the level of pre-operative anxiety. Conclusion: This research emphasizes the influence of various factors on the preoperative psychology of patients and concentrates on high-risk subgroups in order to facilitate effective interventions to alleviate preoperative anxiety.
