Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is a common Gram-positive bacterium that can cause serious infections, with its resistance to multiple antibiotics posing significant treatment challenges. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted to identify the distribution and antimicrobial resistance profiles of S. aureus isolates from clinical specimens collected at Tam Anh General Hospital in 2023. Results: A total of 141 S. aureus strains were isolated, predominantly from male patients (53.9%) and children under 16 years old (54.6%), with the highest occurrence in the pediatric department (46.1%). The primary sources of these isolates were pus (49.6%) and respiratory secretions (44.0%). Resistance was highest to penicillin (96.5%), erythromycin (80.1%), and clindamycin (77.3%), with low resistance observed to rifampin (1.4%). All isolates were fully susceptible to vancomycin and linezolid (100%). Methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) accounted for 81.6% of the isolates, with the highest distribution rate in the pediatric departments (47.8%). Conclusions: The findings reveal a high prevalence of antibiotic-resistant S. aureus, particularly MRSA, underscoring the critical need for ongoing antimicrobial resistance surveillance and enhanced infection prevention measures in healthcare settings. These efforts are essential to mitigate the spread of drug-resistant S. aureus strains.
