Abstract

Objectives: Describe the imaging characteristics of acute appendicitis on computed tomography (CT). Evaluate the value of 16-slice computed tomography in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on patients clinically diagnosed with appendicitis before surgery. Underwent non-contrast computed tomography and pathology at Hai Duong Provincial General Hospital. Results and Conclusions: Characteristics of appendicitis on computed tomography (CT):  Appendix diameter >6mm in 96.77% of cases. Appendix wall thickness >3mm in 77.4% of cases. 96.8% of the contents within the appendix lumen are fluid. Peri-appendiceal fat infiltration in 92.5% of cases. Cecal wall thickening around the appendix base in 33.9% of cases. The value of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of appendicitis: The correct detection rate of the appendix location is 95.3%. The diagnostic value of computed tomography for appendicitis has a sensitivity of 95.2%, accuracy of 92.2%, and a positive predictive value of 96.7%.
