Abstract

Background: The assessment of knowledge and evaluation of treatment compliance to insulin among outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is an important factor in improving treatment outcomes. Comprehensive knowledge about the disease and treatment methods, especially the use of insulin, can improve treatment outcomes and enhance the quality of life for patients. Objectives: To assess the knowledge about insulin use and evaluate treatment compliance to insulin among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus being treated at the Outpatient Clinic of Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital. Subjects and Methods: The study was conducted on outpatients visiting and receiving treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus at the Department of Examination, Hoc Mon General Hospital from January 2024 to May 2024. Results: Among the 120 patients surveyed, 76 patients (63.3%) had adequate knowledge about insulin use, while 44 patients (36.7%) did not. Statistical analysis showed that factors such as age, gender, residential area, occupation, education level, marital status, BMI, duration of disease diagnosis, medication regimen, insulin injection schedule, frequency of health check-ups, and comorbidities did not significantly influence knowledge about insulin use (P > 0.05). Besides, the proportion of patients adhering to insulin treatment was 99 patients (82.5%), while only 21 patients (17.5%) did not adhere. Similarly, no factors were found to affect adherence levels in the study group (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The survey results showed that approximately 63.3% of patients had adequate knowledge of insulin use, while 36.7% lacked sufficient knowledge. Regarding treatment compliance, 82.5% of patients demonstrated good adherence. These findings highlight the necessity of health education programs to improve knowledge and compliance with insulin therapy among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
