Abstract

Introduction: Self-management is crucial in controlling type 2 diabetes, especially for newly diagnosed patients. Comprehensive assessment of self-care behaviors using tools such as the Vietnamese version of the Diabetes Self-Management Instrument (V - DSMI) provides insights into the self-management characteristics of this patient group. Objective: The study was conducted to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and self-care behaviors of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients at Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center, as well as to analyze differences based on demographic factors, antidiabetic medications used and comorbidities in relation with V - DSMI scores. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 103 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients at University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City. Self-management was assessed using the V - DSMI scale. Results: The total mean V - DSMI score for knowledge, attitudes, and self-care behaviors was 101.2 ± 18.5. Among the subscales, the median scores were: Self-Integration (33.0; interquartile range: 27.5–38.0), Self-Regulation (21.0; interquartile range: 13.0–27.0), Interaction with Healthcare Professionals and Significant Others (32.0; interquartile range: 27.0–35.0), Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (8.0; interquartile range: 4.0–12.0) and Adherence to Recommended Regimen (12.0; interquartile range: 11.0–12.0). The total V - DSMI score also showed significant statistical differences across gender, education level, and hypertension status. Conclusion: The self-management of health among newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients achieved relatively good results but still requires improvement in subscales with low scores, such as Self-Regulation and Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose. Male gender, higher education levels, and the absence of comorbid hypertension were significantly associated with better self-care practices.
