Abstract

Objective: To describe the prevalence of anxiety and depression among preoperative patients at the General Hospital of Agriculture in 2023 and analyze related factors. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 200 patients scheduled for elective surgery in the General Surgery and Otolaryngology Departments from June 2023 to December 2023, using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: The mean scores for anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-D) were 10.1 ± 2.5 and 10.9 ± 2.7, respectively (total 21 points). The prevalence of anxiety and depression was 39% and 50.5%, respectively. Female patients had a higher risk of anxiety and depression compared to males (OR = 6.2 and 5.8). A history of previous surgery significantly increased the risk of anxiety and depression (OR = 3.2 and 2.9). Conclusions: The prevalence of anxiety and depression among preoperative patients was relatively high, particularly among females and those with a history of surgery. Screening and psychological interventions are necessary to improve treatment outcomes.
