CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF OCULAR INJURY RELATED TO HAND-HELD LAWN MOWER IN VIETNAM NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY IN 2020-2022

Abstract

Introduction: Handheld lawn mowers are commonly used in rural areas for garden and field works. Most workers are not aware of wearing safety glasses while using the machine, leading to eye injuries due to high-speed and dirty iron or rocks fragments... created by lawn mowers flying into the eyes. Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of lawn mower–related injuries. Participants: The study comprised 33 patient cases. Methods: A descriptive study. Results: Of the 33 eyes (33 patients) with hand held lawn mower - related injury, 84.8% were men, mean age of 46.1 ± 10.7 years (range, 19–72 years). One hundred percent  did not use protective eyewear. The mean time from injury to open-globe repair was 2.6 ± 2.1 days. Open-globe injuries were found in 32/33 (97%) eyes. Entry wound were at the cornea in 75.8%, at the sclera-cornea in 15.2%, and at sclera in 6.1% of cases. Lens rupture happened in 75,8%.  Intraocular foreign body were found in 24 eyes (72.7%). 45,8% of IFOBs were at the vitreous cavity, 41,7% embedded in the retina. Endophthalmitis occurred in 12 eyes (36.4%). Conclusion: Hand held lawn mower related- ocular injuries were severe with high rate of  intraocular foreign bodies, lens rupture and endopthalmitis.
