Abstract

Background: Septicemia is a life-threatening infection responsible for millions of deaths worldwide each year. Methods: In 2023, a cross-sectional study was conducted at Bac Ninh General Hospital to determine the prevalence and distribution of common bacterial pathogens causing septicemia. Results: Among 2,308 blood culture samples, 232 were positive, yielding an infection rate of 10.1%. The majority of septicemia cases were observed in the Internal Medicine departments (65.1%) and were more prevalent in males (62.1%) compared to females (37.9%). The distribution rate of septicemia increased with age, with the highest rate in patients aged 60 years and older (62.1%). Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 76.3% of cases, with Escherichia coli (34.1%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (15.9%), Acinetobacter baumannii (14.2%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (4.7%) being the most frequently isolated pathogens. Gram-positive bacteria comprised 22.8% of cases, with Staphylococcus aureus being the predominant species (19.4%). Conclusion: The prevalence of septicemia appears to be decreasing. Continued efforts in infection control are essential further to reduce the risk of bacteremia in healthcare settings.
