CLINICAL AND IMAGING CHARACTERISTICS OF RENAL CANCER IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING BIOPSY UNDER COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY GUIDANCE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical and imaging characteristics of renal cancer patients who underwent biopsy under computed tomography (CT) guidance. Subjects and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 33 renal cancer patients who were diagnosed and underwent surgery at Hanoi Oncology Hospital from February 2023 to January 2025. Results: The mean age of the patients was 51,55 ± 13,89 years. Among them, 60,6% were asymptomatic, while 39,4% presented with symptoms. The tumor location (upper, middle, or lower pole of both kidneys) showed no statistically significant difference (p > 0,05). The largest proportion of tumors (48,56%) had a larger diametter ranging from 4 to 7 cm, with no statistically significant difference between tumor size groups (p = 0,103 > 0,05). The most common tumor characteristic was renal capsule bulging (91%), whereas the lowest proportion was found in tumors with extracapsular extension (3%). The most frequently observed enhancement pattern was strong arterial-phase enhancement (60,6%). Tumors with intratumoral hemorrhage and necrosis were found in 21% and 27% of cases, respectively. Perihilar lymph node involvement was observed in 3 patients (9%), while renal vein thrombus was detected in 1 patient (3%). Conclusion: Renal cancer is commonly found in middle-aged and elderly patients and is often detected incidentally. On CT imaging, renal tumors frequently exhibit strong arterial-phase enhancement, hemorrhage, necrosis, along with other features such as renal vein thrombus, and perihilar lymphadenopathy.
