THE EFFICACY OF TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION IN TREATING PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC DAILY HEADACHE AT TAM ANH GENERAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To assess the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in treating patients with primary chronic daily headaches. Materials and Methods: A descriptive study of 27 patients with primary chronic daily headaches, treated with rTMS. The treatment consisted of 15 high-frequency (20 Hz) rTMS sessions delivered over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) at Tam Anh General Hospital from January 2024 to April 2024. Results: Among the 27 patients (4 males, 23 females), the average age was 51 ± 13.58 years. Before treatment, the average headache frequency (number of pain days per month) was 22.52 ± 5.33 days. The average headache intensity, according to the VAS scale, was 5.19 ± 1.64. The average headache index (headache frequency intensity) was 118.04 ± 51.80. The average score on the Headache Impact Test (HIT-6) was 58.11 ± 10.91. After rTMS stimulation, patients showed a statistically significant reduction in headache parameters and HIT-6 scores compared to before treatment (P < 0.05). A percentage improvement of over 30% was reported by 81.5% of patients (moderate: 55.6%, high: 25.9%). Side effects, such as mild dizziness (3.7%) and mild headache at the coil placement site (7.4%), were transient and reversible. No severe complications were noted. Conclusion: The study results indicated that daily high-frequency rTMS therapy for three weeks led to a considerable reduction in pain intensity and headache impact in the treatment of chronic daily headaches.
