OVERWEIGHT, OBESITY AND SOME RELATED FACTORS OF PRESCHOOL CHILDREN IN THIEN PHIEN COMMUNE, HUNG YEN PROVINCE IN 2024

Abstract

Objective: The study aims to describe the current status of overweight and obesity and some related factors of preschool children in Thien Phien commune, Hung Yen province in 2024. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 274 preschool children in Thien Phien commune, Hung Yen province. Results: Children participating in the study belong to 4 age groups, children in the 24 - 35.9 month old group account for the least proportion of 10.2% and the largest number of children are in the 60 - 72 month old group with a proportion of 34.7%. The gender ratio is quite similar with boys accounting for 51.5% and girls accounting for 48.5%. With 274 children in the study, the rate of overweight/obesity is 16.06%, in boys the proportion is 20.57% higher than in girls (11.28%). The rate of overweight and obesity in children was highest in the age group of 60-72 months (20%) and lowest in the age group of 24-35.9 months (10.71%). Children of mothers with secondary education level were 2.4 times more likely to have overweight and obesity than children of mothers with college; university education level (p<0.044). Children with a birth weight ≥ 4,000g were 6.96 times more likely to have overweight and obesity than children with a birth weight of 2,500-3,500g (p<0.0004). No statistically significant association was found between overweight and obesity in children and children who were exclusively breastfed in the first 6 months, the time of complementary feeding and the time of weaning. Conclusion: In 274 children participating in the study, the rate of overweight and obesity was 16.06%. Some factors related to overweight and obesity in children include birth weight ≥ 4,000g and low education level of the mother.
