Abstract

Introduction: Deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities (DVTLE) significantly affects patients’ quality of life (QoL) but has not been adequately assessed in Vietnam. Objectives: To determine the average QoL score and analyze factors associated with QoL in DVTLE patients undergoing treatment at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City in 2024. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 66 inpatients diagnosed with DVTLE at the Department of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City, from September to December 2024. QoL and symptoms were assessed using the VEINES-QOL/Sym scale; data were analyzed using Stata software. Results: The mean patient age was 53.4 ± 18.1 years; the mean VEINES-QOL score was 48.9 ± 7.9. Age was negatively correlated with QoL (r = –0.267; p = 0.03). The QoL score was significantly lower in patients with comorbidities compared to those without (mean difference of 5.9 points; p = 0.001), particularly in patients with hypertension (p = 0.009) and diabetes (p = 0.007). No statistically significant association was found between QoL and other baseline characteristics. Conclusions: The QoL of inpatients with DVTLE was moderately low. Older age and comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes were associated with lower QoL scores. Assessing QoL during hospitalization helps identify risk factors early, optimize treatment, and develop appropriate intervention strategies for patients.
