FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS IN OLDER ADULTS WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To identify factors associated with depression in older patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 228 older patients diagnosed with PD at the National Geriatric Hospital. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Factors related to depression included demographic characteristics, PD severity, age at disease onset, and quality of life (PDQ-8). Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 software. Results: The mean age of the patients was 69.3 ± 5.4 years, with a female-to-male ratio of 1.5:1. A statistically significant difference was found between PD severity and depressive symptoms (p = 0.02), with a higher prevalence of depression in patients with moderate to severe PD. Multivariate regression analysis showed that poor quality of life was an independent factor associated with depression (p < 0.001, OR = 1.37, 95% CI 1.22-1.54). Conclusion: Univariate analysis indicated that age and PD severity were associated with the risk of depression in older patients with PD. Multivariate regression analysis identified quality of life as an independent predictor of depression, emphasizing the importance of improving quality of life to reduce the risk of depression in older patients with PD.
