Abstract

This study aims to assess the sexual function status of patients after endoscopic surgery for lumbar spinal disc herniation at Hanoi Medical University Hospital. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted with 30 participants using a convenience sampling. The mean age of the participants was 45.3 ± 10.2 years, with mostly undergoing surgery at L5S1 (96.7%). The results showed a significant improvement in sexual function after surgery, with the frequency of sexual intercourse increasing from 3.65 ± 3.07 to 5.71 ± 4.24 times per month. Preoperatively, all patients had sexual dysfunction due to nerve compression caused by the disease, which improved significantly after surgery. Only 60% of women and 55% of men reported having sexual dysfunction after surgery. Pain levels after intercourse, assessed using the VAS, decreased significantly from 8.11 ± 2.01 before surgery to 1.23 ± 1.08 after surgery. Factors such as age, pain after intercourse, stress, and smoking were associated with sexual dysfunction. In conclusion, endoscopic surgery for lumbar disc herniation positively impacts sexual function and reduces pain levels in patients. Incorporating sexual history into routine medical assessments and providing post-surgical counseling are recommended for optimal overall functional outcomes.
