Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the improvement in VAS and KOOS scores after 12 months of treatment in patients with knee osteoarthritis using autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 36 patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis (OA) at stages 2 and 3 according to the Kellgren and Lawrence classification from January 2025 to March 2025. Results: Among the 36 patients in the study, females accounted for the majority (77.8%). Age distribution showed that 52.8% of patients were aged 60 years or older. The predominant occupation was manual labor (51.3%), followed by elderly/retired individuals (22.2%), housewives (19.3%), and intellectual workers (7.6%). Based on the Kellgren and Lawrence classification, 66.67% of patients were in stage 2, while 33.33% were in stage 3. The mean VAS score for stage 2 patients decreased from 6.32 ± 1.49 to 5.03 ± 1.68 after 1 month and 2.48 ± 1.55 after 3 months. In stage 3 patients, the VAS score decreased from 6.53 ± 1.81 to 5.2 ± 1.67 after 1 month and 2.03 ± 1.33 after 3 months. Overall, the mean VAS score decreased from 6.43 ± 1.65 to 5.11 ± 1.66 after 1 month and 3.26 ± 1.45 after 3 months (p < 0.05), indicating a significant reduction in pain over time. The mean KOOS score for stage 2 patients increased from 62.99 ± 15.83 to 76.05 ± 18.02 after 1 month and 82.65 ± 14.6 after 3 months. In stage 3 patients, the KOOS score increased from 46.27 ± 13.62 to 56.17 ± 12.62 after 1 month and 67.01 ± 8.13 after 3 months. Overall, the KOOS score improved from 54.77 ± 16.91 to 66.32 ± 18.75 after 1 month and 74.96 ± 14.2 after 3 months (p < 0.05), demonstrating a significant and sustained treatment effect. No complications related to intra-articular injections were recorded during the study. Conclusion: The results of this study on 36 knee OA patients treated with autologous PRP injections show a statistically significant reduction in VAS and KOOS scores at post-treatment time points compared to baseline. This method has demonstrated high safety and effectiveness.
