THE PREVALENCE AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS OF ANEMIA IN CHILDREN AGED 6 TO 60 MONTHS ATTENDING MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS AT GIA LAI PROVINCIAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Anemia poses serious implications for children’s growth and development, compromises immune resistance, and exacerbates existing health conditions. According to the Ministry of Health’s Census, the Central Highlands region has the highest anemia prevalence in children under five nationwide. Objectives: This study aims to determine the prevalence and characteristics of anemia among children aged 6 to 60 months who received medical examinations at Gia Lai Provincial Children’s Hospital in 2023. Additionally, it seeks to identify factors associated with anemia in this population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study design was applied to 435 mother-child pairs with children aged 6 to 60 months who underwent health examinations at the Department of Examination and Emergency at Gia Lai Provincial Children’s Hospital from August 1st to December 31st in 2023. Results: The anemia prevalence among children aged 6 to 60 months attending Gia Lai Provincial Children’s Hospital was 45.5%, with 30.3% classified as mild, 12.2% as moderate, and 3% as severe anemia. Factors related to anemia include ethnicity, place of residence, daycare or kindergarten attendance, and a recent history of respiratory infections. Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia among children attending Gia Lai Provincial Children’s Hospital in 2023 was notably high. Statistically significant factors associated with anemia included ethnicity, residential location, daycare/kindergarten attendance and recent respiratory infection history.
