CASE REPORT: STRATIFIED MUCIN-PRODUCING INTRAEPITHELIAL LESION (SMILE) OF THE UTERINE CERVIX
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Stratified mucin-producing intraepithelial lesion (SMILE) is a rare preinvasive cervical lesion, typically associated with high-risk HPV type 18. Objective: To present an invasive SMILE case detected through routine screening, highlighting the importance of histopathology and immunohistochemistry in diagnosis. Case presentation: A 45-year-old asymptomatic woman was found to have CIN 3/HSIL with HPV type 18. Cone biopsy revealed invasive SMILE with lymphovascular invasion and focal neuroendocrine differentiation. Conclusion: SMILE is a rare and often under-recognized lesion requiring careful pathological assessment and appropriate management to prevent progression.
