CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS INPATIENTS WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Abstract
Research objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of behavioral symptoms inpatients with Alzheimer's disease. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 86 inpatients with Alzheimer's disease at the National Institute of Mental Health - Bach Mai Hospital and the Department of Mental Health National Geriatric Hospital from August 2024 to June 2025. Results: The prevalence of patients with behavioral symptoms was 89.5%, with agitation being the most common symptom (81.4%), particularly non-aggressive behaviors (69.7%). The rates of irritability, loss of control, nightime behaviors, and eating symptoms were 30.2%, 22.1%, 69.8%, and 23.3%, respectively. Among patients with severe cognitive impairment, non-aggressive behaviors were the most frequently observed (82.3%). In the moderate cognitive impairment group, nightime behaviors were the most common (68.7%). For those with mild cognitive impairment, irritability and non-aggressive speech were frequently encountered. Conclusion: Behavioral symptoms are very common in patients with Alzheimer's disease. These symptoms vary and differ depending on the severity of cognitive impairment.
