Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the correlation between wheal size in skin prick test and specific IgE serum levels in allergic rhinitis patients in Vietnam. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 145 allergic rhinitis patients in Ho Chi Minh City. Each patient underwent both skin prick test and specific IgE serum measurement for airborne allergens. Pearson correlation and linear regression analyses were used to assess the relationship. Results: A statistically significant positive correlation was found between wheal size and specific IgE levels for house dust mites (Dp: β=0.078, Df: β=0.112, Bl: β=0.112), cockroach (β=0.524) and dog dander (β=3.009), with p<0.001. Cat dander showed no significant correlation (β=0.052, p=0.09). Combining both methods increased diagnostic accuracy from 73.33% to 86.21%. Conclusion: The correlation between skin prick test and specific IgE varies by allergen type. Both methods should be combined to optimize diagnosis in clinical practice.
