Abstract

Background: Malocllusion is one of the dental problems that is becoming increasingly common, not only affecting chewing function but also affecting facial aesthetics, speech ability and quality of life. Research objective: Describe the condition of malocclusion and determine the need for orthodontic treatment of students at Tra Vinh University according to the IOTN index. Research subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 250 students (106 men and 144 women). Results: The rate of malocclusion in the study was 89.2%; of which men account for 87.7% and women account for 90.3%. Class I malocclusion according to Angle accounts for the highest rate at 61.2% and the lowest rate is class II at 10.0%. The most common cause in the classification of dental health is tooth position displacement >1mm (41.1%). Research on the need for treatment according to the IOTN index according to the dental health component has 85.6% and according to the dental aesthetic component, 74.4% of students have little/need for orthodontic treatment. Conclusion: The state of malocclusion and the need for orthodontic treatment accounts for a high rate among students.
