Abstract

Research Objective: To determine the status of dental caries and current treatment practices among students at Tra Vinh University for the academic year 2023 – 2024. Research Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study with uncontrolled intervention was conducted on 348 students at Tra Vinh University. The study was carried out from March 2024 to March 2025 at the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, School of Medicine and Pharmacy, Tra Vinh University. Data were collected through questionnaires and dental examination forms. Results: The prevalence of dental caries among students at Tra Vinh University was 68.1%. Of these, 64.4% of the students received treatment, primarily needing fillings, followed by tooth extraction and root canal treatment. The prevalence of first molar caries was 55.7%, with lower molars more affected than upper molars (45.4% compared to 35.6%). The DMFT index was 3.93 (Decayed: 3.3; Missing: 0.15; Filled: 0.48). The DMFT index was classified as moderate according to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2013 standards [1]. Conclusion: The priority level for dental examinations and access to dental services in Vietnam remains limited.
