Abstract

Objective: To assess the clinical outcomes of treatment for early-stage (Stage I and II) mobile tongue squamous cell carcinoma in patients aged 60 years and older at K Hospital. Materials and Methods: This study is a combined retrospective and prospective descriptive analysis conducted on 95 patients aged ≥60 years with stage I or II mobile tongue cancer. All patients were histopathologically diagnosed and received treatment at K Hospital from January 2019 to December 2024. Results: The mean age of the patients was 67,6 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1,07. Among the study population, 52,6% were diagnosed at stage I and 47,4% at stage II. The recurrence rate following treatment was 12,6%, with the majority of recurrences occurring in the cervical lymph nodes (75,0%). The 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were 87,4% and 93,7%, respectively. The mean DFS and OS durations were 53,1 months and 56,9 months, respectively. Age, histological grade, depth of invasion, and disease stage were found to be significant prognostic factors for both DFS and OS, with statistical significance observed at p < 0,05. Conclusion: Early-stage tongue cancer treatment in elderly patients demonstrates favorable long-term outcomes in terms of disease-free and overall survival.
