FINDINGS FROM THE SUPPORTIVE COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR LIVER AND COLORECTAL CANCER PATIENTS IN VIETNAM
Main Article Content
Abstract
Cancer management requires a multidisciplinary approach to improve treatment outcomes and patients' quality of life. Objective: To assess the preliminary outcomes of a patient support and counseling program for individuals with liver and colorectal cancer in Vietnam. Subjects and Methods: This was a non-controlled, longitudinal intervention study conducted at K Hospital (Hanoi) and Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital from April 2022 to April 2024. Results: After three months, patients’ understanding of their disease, treatment, and associated side effects significantly improved (p < 0.0001). The mean stress score also decreased significantly (from 2.79 to 2.3; p = 0.025). A total of 98.1% of patients reported being satisfied or very satisfied with the program, and 100% adhered to their prescribed use of Stivarga. The program helped 98.1% of patients gain better awareness of treatment side effects and provided effective support for mental health and lifestyle in 90.5% of cases. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that patient counseling management support is highly feasible and should be integrated into comprehensive cancer care models in Vietnam.
