Abstract

Hepatitis E is a significant infectious disease caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV). Despite its less frequent diagnosis compared to hepatitis B and C, this illness significantly impacts public health in Vietnam. Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical features of patients infected with the hepatitis E virus who presented at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases for assessment and treatment in 2023. Materials and methodes: Retrospective cross-sectional descriptive analysis involving 209 patients diagnosed with HEV who presented to the hospital for evaluation and treatment between January 2023 and December 2023. Results: The study comprised 209 individuals infected with HEV, of whom 62.2% were male, with a mean age of 51 ± 13.4 years. Patients younger than 60 years old accounted for 77.5%. Patients infected with HEV who had food-related occupations accounted for 17.2%, those with chronic underlying diseases accounted for 32.5%, and those with gastritis accounted for 31.1%. Regarding clinical manifestations, the group of patients with no clinical manifestations accounted for 16.7%. Symptoms of fatigue and anorexia accounted for 78.9%. Neurological damage in patients infected with HEV occurred at a rate of 8.1%. The group with HEV monoinfection had significantly less liver damage than the group co-infected with HEV/HBV and/or HCV, with p < 0.05. The mortality rate in the group co-infected with HBV/HEV and/or HCV/HEV was significantly higher than the group with HEV monoinfection. Conclusion: Hepatitis E virus infection is an important infectious disease with significant impact on community health. The co-infected group had more severe liver damage and higher mortality rate than the HEV monoinfection group.
