EVALUATION OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND SERUM CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D LEVELS IN PATIENTS WITH ULCERATIVE COLITIS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: Evaluation of nutritional status and serum calcium and vitamin D levels in patients with ulcerative colitis. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 33 patients diagnosed with ulcerative colitis with bleeding at Bach Mai Hospital. Results: 54,5% patients with ulcerative colitis with bleeding were malnourished according to the SGA. The rate of malnutrition based on BMI in these patients was 30.3%. Hypocalcemia (2,16 ± 0,16 mmol/l) was observed in 36.4% of patients with ulcerative colitis with bleeding. Vitamin D deficiency (21,1 ± 8,1 ng/ml) was found in 54.5% of patients with ulcerative colitis with bleeding. The rate of malnutrition according to the SGA, decreased total calcium and vitamin D levels was positively correlated with disease activity (P<0.05). Conclusions: Malnutrition is observed in up to 50% of patients with bleeding duodenal ulcers, and 54.5% of these patients exhibit vitamin D deficiency. There is a positive correlation between disease activity and both the prevalence of malnutrition and serum vitamin D levels.
