SURVEY OF CORNEAL ENDOTHELIAL CELLS CHANGES IN NARROW ANTERIOR CHAMBER ANGLE PATIENTS TREATED WITH PROPHYLACTIC PERIPHERAL IRIDOTOMY USING LASER
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: Investigate changes in indicators of density and morphology of corneal endothelial cells before and after performing prophylactic laser iridectomy on patients with narrow anterior chamber angle. Method: A prospective cohort study with total 49 narrow-angle eyes which have indication for peripheral iridotomy by using laser in Glaucoma Department – Eye Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City. Corneal edothelial cells’s image index is captured and anylized by a noncontact automated specular microscope. Results: The average age of the study sample was 57,4 ± 8,5 years, with a majority of females 87,8% (43 eyes). The visual acuity remains stable, intraocular pressure showed no statistically significant decrease. The endothelial cell density and coefficient of variation of cell size at the treatment site was decreased slightly but was not statistically significant. There was a 3,3% decrease in the percentage of hexagonal cells at the treatment site after one month of peripheral iridotomy (p < 0,001). Conclusions: This study demonstrated a significant endothelial cell’s morphological characteristics change at the treated site in 1 month after Nd: YAG peripheral iridotomy, and suggest that laser iridotomy may cause a long term affect on the cornea, although the corneal decompensation as a whole was not seen.
