Abstract
Objectives: This study was aimed at analyzing the characteristics of antibiotic use in patients who underwent clean, clean-contaminated surgery. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted based on medical records of patients who underwent clean, clean-contaminated surgery at the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Viet Duc University Hospital during October 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. Results: A total of 236 medical records of patients were included. Approximately 43.22% of patients had at least one risk factor for surgical site infection. The incidence of surgical site infection was 2.07%. More than 85% of patients received one dose of prophylactic antibiotics in the operating room, mainly cefamandole 2g and cefoperazone 1g and almost all of them were used within 60 minutes before skin incision. No patient received an additional dose of prophylactic antibiotics when the surgery was prolonged. All of the patients were prescribed antibiotics until discharge, with the majority received oral antibiotics for out-patient use. Frequent changes in antibiotic regimens were commonly observed during hospitalization. Conclusion: This study showed an overview of the current situation of antibiotic prophylaxis at the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, thereby highlighted the need of implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs in surgical departments based on the actual clinical context.
