CHARACTERISTICS OF SUICIDAL BEHAVIOR IN PATIENT WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER CURRENT EPISODE DEPRESSION

Abstract

Objectives: To describe the characteristics of suicidal behavior in patients with bipolar disorders current episode depression. Subjects and methods: A descriptive study was conducted on 108 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder current episode depression at Bach Mai Hospital from August 2024 to May 2025. Results: The majority of patients were female (63,0%), with the average age is 36.8 ± 1.6 years. Suicidal behavior was observed in 39.8% of the patients. Among these, the most common pattern was experiencing suicidal ideation multiple times per day (44.2%), with ideation occurring throughout the day but intensifying at night. Suicidal thoughts were primarily triggered by feelings that life is not worth living (n = 36) and the desire to end unbearable emotional pain (n = 25). A large proportion of patients (81.4%) reported difficulty in controlling these suicidal thoughts. The most frequently considered method of suicide was drug overdose (50%). Conclusion: Suicide behavior is a common issue in the current bipolar disorder current episode depression, which requires proactive monitoring, intervention, and treatment.
