Abstract

Background: The National Hospital Of Traditional Medicine is the leading traditional medicine in Vietnam. Objective: To survey the disease model and the treatment situation of gastrointestinal diseases in the elderly at the National Hospital Of Traditional Medicine in 2023. Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 688  medical records of old patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal diseases according to ICD-10 at the Geriatrics Department of the National Hospital Of Traditional Medicine in 2023. Results: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was the most common, accounting for 86.0% of cases. Hypertension was the most prevalent comorbidity (73.5%). The most utilized treatment approach was the combination of modern medicine and traditional medicine (94.6%). The most commonly used modern treatments were Stomach protection medicines (91.9%), and the most common non-pharmacological method was ultrasound (49.6%). Treatment with integrated pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical therapies within conventional medicine is the most commonly applied method (89.4%). Commonly used traditional medicine methods included herbal medicine (87.3%), acupressure massage (88.0%), and electroacupuncture (74.0%). Overall treatment results were 92.9% improvement. Conclusion: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is the most common circulatory system disease. The combination of Traditional Medicine and Modern Medicine in treating elderly patients yields high effectiveness.
