Abstract

Aims: To determine the concentration of plasma magnesium and its relationship with the degree of liver failure in patients with cirrhosis. Subjects and methods: Prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 108 patients with cirrhosis who were tested for fasting plasma magnesium using the end-point colorimetric method at the Department of Gastroenterology - Military Hospital 103. Results: The median of plasma magnesium level was 0.68 ± 0.12 mmol/L. 37.0% of patients with cirrhosis had plasma magnesium deficiency. The average concentration of plasma magnesium was significantly lower in the group of patients with Child-Pugh C and ALBI-3 cirrhosis compared to patients with Child-Pugh A/B, ALBI-1 and ALBI-2 cirrhosis (p < 0.05). Plasma magnesium concentration in patients with cirrhosis had a weak negative correlation with Child-Pugh score (correlation coefficient r = -0.23, p = 0.017) and ALBI score (r = -0.23; p = 0.018). Conclusion: Plasma magnesium decreased in patients with cirrhosis, the decrease was related to the degree of liver failure according to the Child-Pugh and ALBI scores.
