Abstract

Objective: Evaluation of post-intervention effectiveness when applying the model of prevention and management of some common non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the elderly (NCT) in Thanh Thuy district. Research subjects and methods: Community intervention study evaluating the effectiveness before and after on 384 elderly people (aged 60 and over) with registered residence and living in Xuan Loc, Tu Vu communes and Thanh Thuy town, Thanh Thuy district, applying a pilot model of prevention and management of some common non-communicable diseases in the elderly, participating in screening, answering pre-designed interview questions and in-depth interviews, and group discussions with the subjects. Results: The rate of compliance with treatment of non-communicable diseases in the elderly increased after the intervention. The effectiveness index reached from 11.0% to 54.4%. After the intervention, the rate of compliance with treatment of diabetes increased from 59.4% to 91.7%, the effectiveness index reached 54.4%; hypertension increased from 43.2% to 60.2%, the effectiveness index reached 39.4%, the difference was statistically significant with p<0.01. The rate of elderly people with good salt consumption behavior after the intervention increased slightly compared to before the intervention (80.7% compared to 79.4%). The effectiveness index reached 1.6%. The behavior of consuming foods rich in Glucid of the elderly decreased after the intervention. The results were statistically significant with p<0.01. Conclusion: It is necessary to further strengthen communication and health education for the elderly and improve knowledge and communication skills for grassroots health workers.
