Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the association between allergen sensitization patterns with clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes in asthmatic patients. Methods: A cross-sectional, prospective study was conducted on 146 asthmatic patients in Ho Chi Minh City. Skin prick testing with 12 allergens, clinical assessment according to GINA, ACT score, and pulmonary function tests were performed. Allergen avoidance counseling intervention was implemented for 3 months. Results: The prevalence of mono-sensitization was 56.2% and poly-sensitization was 43.8%. The poly-sensitized group was younger (38.02±12.65 vs 42.82±13.54), had earlier onset (21.16±12.26 vs 33.41±15.03), higher uncontrolled asthma rate (65.45% vs 23.17%), lower FEV1, and more frequent reliever use (p<0.001). Allergen avoidance counseling significantly improved outcomes in the mono-sensitized group (77.78% achieved complete control) but showed limited efficacy in the poly-sensitized group. Conclusion: Sensitization patterns influence asthma severity and treatment response, necessitating differentiated treatment strategies.
