ADHERENCE TO HYPERTENSION TREATMENT AND INFLUENCING FACTORS AMONG OUTPATIENTS AT AN GIANG CENTRAL GENERAL HOSPITAL 2024
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: This study aims to describe the adherence to antihypertensive medication treatment among outpatients and identify factors influencing their adherence. Methods: A cross-sectional study design combining quantitative and qualitative approaches was conducted. A total of 206 outpatients were surveyed on antihypertensive medication adherence, along with five in-depth interviews on related factors from February to October 2024. The Chi-square test was used to identify factors influencing antihypertensive medication adherence. Results: The adherence rate to antihypertensive medication was 84.0%. Among those who adhered to treatment, only 45.6% demonstrated sufficient knowledge about hypertension and its management. Several factors were found to significantly influence adherence. Patients with an educational level of middle school or lower were 3.13 times more likely to be non-adherent compared to those with a high school education or higher. Similarly, individuals with insufficient knowledge about hypertension had a 2.58 times higher risk of non-adherence. Patients without complications were 7.73 times more likely to be non-adherent compared to those with complications. Additionally, patients living alone had a sixfold higher risk of non-adherence compared to those living with their families. Lack of family reminders also played a critical role, as patients who did not receive reminders were 3.27 times more likely to be non-adherent compared to those who were reminded by their families. The outpatient hypertension treatment services at the hospital and the healthcare workforce meet patient needs; however, limited medication options affect patients' adherence to antihypertensive treatment. Conclusion: The adherence rate to antihypertensive medication among outpatients was at a good level
