Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence and associated factors of sarcopenia according to the SARC-CalF questionnaire in elderly outpatients with osteoporosis. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 422 outpatients aged ≥ 60 years with osteoporosis at the Rheumatology Clinic and the Geriatrics Clinic of the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City from July 2023 to May 2024. The participants' personal information, anthropometric indices, comorbidities, geriatric characteristics, and data from the SARC-CalF questionnaire to assess sarcopenia were collected. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia, assessed using the SARC-CalF questionnaire, among elderly outpatients with osteoporosis was 37,91%. Factors associated with sarcopenia in outpatients with osteoporosis include: body mass index (OR = 3,43; 95% CI: 1,07–11; p = 0,038 for the underweight group and OR = 0,29; 95% CI: 0,09–0,95; p = 0,041 for the obese group), frailty status (OR = 5,71; 95% CI: 2,34–13,94; p < 0,001 for the pre-frail group and OR = 26,47; 95% CI: 4,13–169,76; p = 0,001 for the frail group), fall history (OR = 26,39; 95% CI: 10,07–69,02; p < 0,001), and nutritional status (OR = 6,03; 95% CI: 2,73–13,3; p < 0,001 for the at-risk group and OR = 14,34; 95% CI: 3,54–58,16; p < 0,001 for the malnourished group). Conclusion: The prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly outpatients with osteoporosis is relatively high. Body mass index, frailty, fall history, and malnutrition are factors associated with sarcopenia.
