SELF-CARE KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES OF ORAL HYGIENE AMONG PATIENTS AFTER THIRD MOLAR EXTRACTION AT PHU THO PROVINCIAL GENERAL HOSPITAL AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to assess the knowledge and self-care practices regarding oral hygiene among patients after third molar extraction at Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital and to identify associated factors. A cross-sectional descriptive design was conducted on 94 outpatients using a structured self-administered questionnaire to collect data on demographics, knowledge, and postoperative practices. Knowledge was evaluated using 13 items (≥9 correct responses or ≥70% considered adequate), while practice was assessed based on 3 items (all correct considered adequate). Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression were applied to identify factors independently associated with knowledge and practice, with statistical significance set at p<0.05. Results showed that 76.6% of participants demonstrated adequate knowledge, and 63.8% reported appropriate self-care practices. The educational level was significantly associated with knowledge, with lower proportions of adequate knowledge observed among those with only lower secondary education compared to those with higher education (50% vs. approximately 80%, p=0.036). Factors positively associated with adequate practice included brushing teeth ≥2 times/day (p=0.04), faster wound healing (within 5–7 days) (p=0.038), and adequate knowledge (p=0.011). Multivariate logistic regression revealed that adequate knowledge (OR=4.045; 95% CI: 1.38–11.89) and brushing frequency of ≥2 times/day (OR=4.684; 95% CI: 1.21–18.20) were independently associated with good practice. Despite most patients having adequate knowledge, approximately one-third did not adhere to proper postoperative oral hygiene practices, indicating the need to strengthen counseling and oral health education following tooth extraction.
