Abstract
Objective: Determine the rate and find factors related to the knowledge and practice of nurses on the prevention of hypothermia during the perioperative period. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 200 nurses of the Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City from 10/2024 to 06/2025. The study was conducted in 2 phases: Phase 1: Standardization of the toolkit by conducting a test study with a group of 30 samples”. Phase 2: Conducting a formal study. The questionnaire surveyed the knowledge and practice of nurses on the prevention of perioperative hypothermia including demographic factors, 27 questions about knowledge and 14 questions about practice. The data was analyzed using Stata 17.0 software. Results: The rate of nurses with good knowledge was 53.5% (107/200), the rate of good practice was 60.0% (120/200). Nurses with good knowledge were 1.67 times higher than the other group (p < 0.001) compared to the other group. Factors related to knowledge include: Working position: OR = 2.40 (95% KTC: 1.05 – 5.46; p = 0.038). Instructed on the prevention of hypothermia before surgery: OR = 5.11 (95% CI: 1.90 – 13.72; p = 0.001). Heating/air warming equipment: OR = 2.86 (95% CI: 1.08 – 7.57; p = 0.035). Independent risk factors related to poor knowledge are the lack of guidelines on the prevention of hypothermia in the workplace: OR = 0.23 (95% CI: 0.11 – 0.49; p < 0.001). A factor related to good practice is guidance on hypothermia prevention in the workplace before surgery: OR = 11.03 (95% CI: 3.88 – 31.30; p < 0.001). Independent risk factors associated with poor practice are lack of guidance on hypothermia prevention in the workplace: OR = 0.115 (95% CI: 0.05 – 0.26; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The percentage of nurses with correct knowledge of perioperative hypothermia prevention was 53.5%. The level of knowledge is still different between working areas (preoperative, operating room, postoperative). The rate of nursing practicing correct prevention of perioperative hypothermia is 60%. The factor of "lack of guidance for the detection of perioperative hypothermia" affects both the knowledge and poor practice of nurses.
