Abstract

Objectives: Evaluating of surgical result of olfactory groove meningiomas (OGM) at Viet Duc hospital. Methods: Retrospective and prospective descriptive study of 41 patients with olfactory groove meningiomas operated from 01/2023 to 6/2025 at Viet Duc hospital. Results: 41 patients with OGM were operated using an operating microscope, including 30 females (73.2%) and 11 males (26.8%); The ratio of females to males was approximately 2.7/1; the average age was 55.7±10.8 years old, the 46-60 age group had the highest rate of 52.1%. The most common presenting symptoms were headache (80.5%), visual changes (34.1%), cognitive changes (34.1%) and altered olfaction (24.4%). The mean tumor diameter was 40.0 ± 14.2 mm. Gross total resection (Simpson Grades II) was achieved in 73.2%, and subtotal resection (Grades IV) was reported in 26.8%. Following surgery, 10.0% achieved improved olfaction, no olfaction change for 12.5% and worsening of olfaction 7.5%. Visual improvement was note in 20.0%, with 12.5% showing no change. Postoperative complication 12,2%: mortality 2.4%, cerebral edema 4,9%, meningitis 2.4%, and hemorrhage 2.4%. Conclusion: The mean age of patients with olfactory groove meningiomas was 55.7 ± 10.8 years, with a female-to-male ratio of approximately 2.7:1. The mean tumor diameter was 40.0 ± 14.2 mm. Gross total resection (Simpson Grades II) was achieved in 73.2%, and subtotal resection (Grades IV) was reported in 26.8%. The complication rate was 12.2%.
