Abstract

Objectives: To determine the association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and related factors with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Hung Vuong Hospital. Methods: This study enrolled pregnant women with gestational age between 24 and 28 weeks who underwent GDM screening from September 2024 to March 2025 using a convenient sampling method. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and medical records. Results: A total of 246 pregnant women were included, of whom 86 were diagnosed with GDM. More than 2/3 of participants were aged 25-34 years. The incidence of GBS colonization was significantly higher in the GDM group compared with the non-GDM group, with RR=1.49 (95% CI: 1.03–2.16, p = 0.034). Additional factors associated with GBS colonization included vaginal infection and a history of GDM. Conclusion: GDM increases the risk of GBS colonization in pregnant women. Enhanced screening for GBS is recommended in high-risk pregnant women, alongside management of vaginal infections and prior GDM history to prevent GBS colonization.
