CHARACTERISTICS OF HYPOGLYCEMIA MANAGEMENT IN DIABETIC PATIENTS PRIOR TO ADMISSION TO BACH MAI HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Hypoglycemia is a common acute complication in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). However, patients' awareness and skills in managing hypoglycemia at home before hospital admission remain limited, increasing the risk of severe complications and mortality. Objective: To describe the characteristics of diabetic patients hospitalized with hypoglycemia at Bach Mai Hospital and to assess their pre-hospital treatment practices. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 100 diabetic patients admitted with hypoglycemia to the Department of Endocrinology, Bach Mai Hospital, from December 2024 to April 2025. Results: Among the patients, 89% were admitted with grade 3 (severe) hypoglycemia. Only 17% could recognize the symptoms of hypoglycemia; 14% performed any management at home, and 12% visited another healthcare facility before coming to Bach Mai Hospital. Conclusion: The awareness of hypoglycemia among diabetic patients remains low, and the rate of incorrect management is still predominant.
