DEPRESSION STATUS, QUALITY OF LIFE AND RELATED FACTORS IN STROKE PATIENTS AT HO CHI MINH CITY HOSPITAL FOR REHABILITATION - PROFESSIONAL DISEASES
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Stroke patients have impaired function leading to low quality of life (QOL) and risk of developing depression. Objectives: To describe the prevalence of depression, assess QoL, and identify associated factors in post-stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study on 157 post-stroke patients at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Rehabilitation-Professional Diseases. Depression was measured with the PHQ-9; QoL was evaluated using the EQ-5D-5L; and functional independence was assessed by the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Results: Minimal depression was observed in 18.5% of participants, and mild depression in 5.7%. The mean QoL score was 17.2 ± 3.7; the mean EQ-index was 0.265 ± 0.304. Overall, 61.0% reported moderate to very severe reductions in QoL. The mean motor FIM score was 64.4 ± 15.6, with 87.3% requiring at least partial assistance. Living outside Ho Chi Minh City (OR = 12.92; p = 0.002) and having children or relatives as caregivers (OR = 19.52; p = 0.047) were linked to a higher risk of depression, whereas emotional support was protective (OR = 0.02; p = 0.004). Residing outside Ho Chi Minh City (β=0.101; p=0.035) and having a higher FIM score (β=0.008; p=0.000) had better QOL according to EQ_index. No significant association was found between depression and either QoL or motor function (p > 0.05) Conclusions: Social factors—specifically place of residence, caregiver relationship, and availability of emotional support—are associated with post-stroke depression risk. Early incorporation of depression screening and psychological interventions into rehabilitation protocols is recommended to enhance recovery outcomes and quality of life.
